Documents and Requirements for Renting a Car
All car rental companies require a valid driver's license. Some companies check the driver’s history and will not rent to a client with a bad record. In some foreign countries, an international driver’s license may be required. Many companies also require a credit card to guarantee payment, even if there is a prepaid voucher. If you use a credit card for payment, be aware of the card’s limit; many car rental companies require credit approval before renting the car, which can substantially reduce the card’s remaining balance.
Payment Method
In most cases, a credit card is required. If you do not have a credit card, most rent-a-car agencies will accept their own prepaid vouchers issued by a designated travel agent.
Most companies will require a significant cash deposit or advance payment as a rental guarantee, which can exceed the estimated rental fees if a credit card is not presented for payment. Companies may also require a minimum age for rental. However, final acceptance of a car rental without a credit card remains at the discretion of each location.
Driver's Age
Typically, car rental companies require clients to be at least 18 years old, but some firms now require a minimum age of 21 or even 25 years. For clients under 25, a credit card for payment is often required, and the rental price may be higher. Similarly, older individuals may face difficulties renting a car at various companies. It is therefore advisable to check age restrictions when making a reservation.
Number of Drivers
Although policies vary, many rent-a-car firms allow a close relative of legal age to drive the rental car. Some firms also permit a business associate to drive the rental car. It is recommended to read the rental contract carefully, where it will specify who can drive the car. The company will require the signatures and driver's licenses of all drivers. There may also be a fee for any additional driver added to the rental contract.
Check for Damages
Walk around the car, noting any scratches or dents. Use a camera or smartphone to take photos or video of any damage (or lack thereof). Indicate any issues to a company representative to avoid being charged for them. Verify that you have been provided with the appropriate documents for the car and the necessary accessories.
Reserve in Advance
Booking early offers flexibility in choosing and setting prices. Whether you are a tourist on vacation, a business person, or visiting relatives, the earlier you make your reservation, the more vehicles will be available, offering a wider selection and better prices. Make an effort to arrive early or at least on time when returning the car. Even a slight delay can cost you an additional day’s rental fee.
